Daalder and Goldgeier Call For A Global NATO

Today’s security threats demand global military capability, argue Ivo Daalder of Brookings and James Goldgeier of George Washington University. International alliances should incorporate new partners that can share the increasing demand for troops and meet the new requirements for a secure global community. NATO’s membership should be opened up beyond the original cold war mandate prescribed by Article 10 of the North Atlantic Treaty to include democratic states outside Europe’s borders. Military operations in Afghanistan set a new precedent for NATO to transform itself from a transatlantic entity to a global one, based on shared values and democratic principles rather than on unified threats.
