G8 Adopts a Cooperative Approach to Climate Change

At this year's G8 summit, the focus will be convincing big emitters (China, US) and developing countries to commit to the Kyoto protocol. ++ Making attractive proposals to encourage emission cuts and highlighting their benefits in terms of energy consumption and pollution reduction will require diplomatic leadership. ++ As part of environment ministers' Kobe initiative, a sector-specific approach and supportive measures on behalf of industrial countries are being discussed to extract concessions from developing countries.
