It's a Poor World After All
Editorial, The New York Times | September 2, 2008
The World Bank recently reported that in 2005 there were 1.4 billion people living below the poverty line - a figure which it had previously underestimated. ++ Still, this figure does not take into account the rising food and energy prices witnessed in the last two years. ++ This new data only stresses the necessity for aid stemming from developed countries, particularly the G8. ++ Having supplied $62 billion of a promised $92 billion in world aid last year, the now more-evident poverty crisis should spur the G8 to fulfill its commitments to those in need.
