Joel Achenbach on How America Will Remain "The Shining City on A Hill"
Washington Post columnist Joel Achenbach takes a look back at the history of world empires and makes some bets on America’s future. The list of empires is extensive and some enjoyed great longevity, notes Achenbach. However, “no one stays on top forever,” and many who adhere to the notion of “declinism” feel that it is the US’s turn to take the downward spiral. But Achenbach argues that, by thinking the US’s problems are too large, “declinists” under represent the problems that other countries face and sell short the possible successes the US could experience over the next 50 years.
