A perspective on Benazir Bhutto

ilyas m mohsin:

Benazir gave her life in her serious attempt to bring back democracy to Pakistan. Despite assurances offered for her safe-return home etc, she, reportedly, got assassinated after

finishing a grand public meeting in Rawalpindi in her style. The cause of her death remains moot officially. Accordingly the new coalition, which emerged as an aftermath of her supreme sacrifce, has approached the UN Secretary General for the conduct of an enquiry in to the horrendous tragedy.

I worked under her for about 5 years as a public servant. However, it was only during my stint as the Secretary Interior for two years that I got to know her as an intellectual, leader and a states-woman with tremendously variegated experiences in life.

On my retirement she persuaded me to join her party despite my initial hesiation. For six years, till she was martyred, I worked for her concentarting on Security/ Terrorism issues,

Governance with special reference to the dispensation of justice/ working of police/ FATA (tribal areas) of Pakistan etc. In the process I had to visit Dubai at times.

I propose to start a regular fature on this illustrious forum which would justify the subject as quoted above. As I keep on writing in our national papers, quite frequently, I have been requested by all and sundry, at home and abroad to write a book on her. I propose to launch this small opening venture to project the memory of this great leader who died in th cause of Democracy and the

healing inter-faith tensions which now, generally, dominate the Globe in the aftermath of 9/11. As the cat is now out of the bag in the US/ world, much of the mess points a finger at the neo-cons who appear to have made all of us look like being  the Passengers of the famous Titanic.

I would welcome suggestions which can help me finalize my plan.Thanks.

I'm amazed at the disregard being shown by my colleagues to this august topic. Benazir Bhutto, twice Prime Minister of Pakistan, was assassinated as she was campaigning for the return of democracy to pakistan. She was also the major activist fighting for inter-faith understanding at the Global level for propmoting peace. Like always, in her last book, she vehemently advocated that Islam' message of peace should be made to prevail in the minds of the Muslims as well as others in the world.

"to this august topic."

Well, you are a bit early since it is still June, not August.

Writing a book on a woman that sacrificed her life for the prospect of democracy in her country is very noble and deserves every respect. I am sure that you would be able to get a grant for a project like this.

Why don't you publish an article about Benazir in the open think tank section and post some background information? Also, you might want to think about formulating concrete questions that are crucial for your book. The resonance is much higher when people feel personally addressed.

I will try to identify people who are more familiar with the topic and ask them to join the discussion.

Thanks Ms. Davidovic. It is an encouraging advice which I propose to follow in due course. I feel confident that I can count on the likes of you in the AC.
Would welcome some more interaction on the subject.

A book on Benazir Bhutto amidst the many books already out on her. Yes, for many people in Pakistan and also elsewhere, Benazir Bhutto continues to be a figure that is admired and respected. What would the book on Benazir be about? Her life/ her thoughts/ her contributions/what she represented and continues to represent? Those seem like off-the cuff remarks one can think of.
A book that looks at her life, in the backdrop of Pakistani society, and her persona and what would Pakistan have been like or shall be - if it could be imagined and fashioned after her - as a persona and as a person in her own right?
Perhaps that may help, one hopes, ina book writing endeavour.
