Iran and the West: A Difficult Relationship

Fouad Naji Maarouf:

Why does the West see in Iran a danger instead of a good partner that could help them in the Middle East? Whats wrong in Iran going nuclear?

Iran is always presented as the bad man of the middle east, but looking at Iran's policies we can´t see that Iran had invaded any country or threatened its neighbours. Its rather the other way round it was attacked by Iraq in the Iran Iraq war during the 1980s. Many would argue that Iran threatenedto destroy Israel, but did it ever attack it? We should be able to distinguish propaganda and realty. Pointing the finger to Iran as supporter of terror organizations is just a matter of point of view. Didn´t the west support Saddam with weapons during his war against Iran.

If fear doesn´t control the minds of the western leaders, Iran would be a good partner who could help reserve their interests there. Iran is an important power that can help stabilize the middle east. Lets compare with China, why is the west so interested in China, that same as Iran, violates human wrights and poses threat to Taiwan, invades Tibet and is the worlds largest polluter.

If the west starts dialog with Iran, Iran wanted that for a long time, I think most of the sticky issues can be solved, and a better influence could be exercised on Iran. Isolating Iran an putting it under siege will not help. Besides Iran has much to offer besides oil.

India, Pakistan and China are countries with nuclear capabilities, and were also willing to use their weapons. But were they boycotted? No. I think the west should give Iran a fair chance and start the dialog for better relation, becauseboth sides will profit from this.

If we read history, Iran is the one who should fear the west, after being separated into influence zones during the beginning of the 20th century by Britain and Russia. But lets learn from history!

the problem with Iran is the despotic lunatic theocrats at his head, thanks to Mr Carter and his guru Zbigniew Brzezinski. whose dream was the great middle east ; seems that dream is turning into a nightmare though.

the other problem, if you allow to this theocraty to get the nuclear power, that meens that the other countries around would also want it, therefore one can imagine how it would be explosive, so far the arabs countries can't go well along together

an idea, one should allow Iran to get the 2016 OG, see what would happen, riots in the world wide and boycott for the innauguration ????

I say, we'll see clearer next year

“Why does the West see in Iran a danger instead of a good partner that could help them in the Middle East?”

Maybe it is because the countries in the Middle East themselves see it that way. Two very interesting examples illustrate this view. Firstly, lots of Arab countries started being interested in building a nuclear capacity the second Iran was known to be engaging in such activity. What is even more telling is that those countries had believed Israel to have nuclear weapons and not even that assessment had ushered in such a dramatic change in their nuclear policy. Secondly, for the first in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict Arab governments – and not just any governments but those of the major Sunni countries Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan – put the blame for an Arab-Israeli war on the Arab party, i. e. Iranian sponsored Hezbollah.

“… looking at Iran's policies we can´t see that Iran had threatened its neighbours. … Many would argue that Iran threatened to destroy Israel, but did it ever attack it?”

If you yourself are indeed aware of the fact that Iran threatened to destroy Israel, why do you then claim that “… looking at Iran’s policies we can’t see that Iran had ... threatened its neighbours”?

“Many would argue that Iran threatened to destroy Israel, but did it ever attack it? … Pointing the finger to Iran as supporter of terror organizations is just a matter of point of view.”

Again, if you yourself are indeed aware of the fact that Iran has been attacking Israel through proxy terror organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah, why do you then ask rhetorically of Iran concerning Israel “but did it ever attack it?”?

Obviously, the fact that you yourself refute your own arguments is telling.

“Iran is an important power that can help stabilize the middle east.” Yes, but only because it destabilizes the Middle East to begin with. Just look how it has been destabilizing Iraq, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. So claiming that Iran “can help stabilize the middle east” is simply a reversal of causality.

“If the west starts dialog with Iran, Iran wanted that for a long time, I think most of the sticky issues can be solved.”

There is nothing to have a dialogue about: The West would be much more forthcoming toward Iran’s nuclear ambitions if it simply was to stop threatening and attacking other countries in the region through proxy terrorist organizations and by that showcasing it is serious when it claims that its nuclear activities are “peaceful”. As long as this is not the case Iran cannot blame the West for not believing that its nuclear ambitions are peaceful.

“India, Pakistan and China are countries with nuclear capabilities, and were also willing to use their weapons. … But were they boycotted?”

You ignore the fact that China is allowed to have nuclear weapons according to the NPT, whereas India and Pakistan – unlike Iran – are not members of the NPT. Moreover, any threat those countries may pose to the West could be nullified by deterrence as a result of MAD. However, deterrence does not work with Iran as it exposes suicidal tendencies as statements like the one of former Iranian President Rafsanjani show (according to him sacrificing 15m Iranians for the sake of killing 5m Israelis would be considered a victory). Now some may object and set forth the same old “We should be able to distinguish propaganda and reality” argument. Yet just look for an indication how Iranian sponsored Hamas and Hezbollah have been sacrificing their own population for military gains. The latest instance shows Hamas blocking fuel from reaching hospitals and instead confiscating it for the use of their leaders and security forces’ vehicles.

It amazes me constantly how this brainwashed weestern society buys into everything their media tell them, "mad mullahs of tehran" no more madder insane than bush and his cronites, Now this is the bit which is the complete .......take! israel " we must not allow iran to develop nuclear weapons" why not! has not israel aquired weapons of mass destruction has not israel threatned first use of nuclear weapons my last count was over two hundred nuclear devices surely israels weapons progarmme is geared towards wipng all of the middle east of the map let alone one country1, for gods sakeb wake up and smell the coffee!!!!!. The story of pharoah springs to mind like for like same as president bush!! my implicit clear transparent conclusion is that we must be fair with our policies a country as great and powerfull as america must demonstrate patience and mercy when dealing with crisis! bush had better ways of dealing with middle east crisis than going in all gung ho!!! now as for the future oil prices on the rise wait and see what happens with iran, and as for israel i just hope it gets it just deserts just as it did when going into lebanon, if israel wages war with iran i pray to the good lord that iran teaches it a lesson just as hezbollah did! my hope for the future is that all nations live and prosper together in peace and harmony otherwise surely we will all head towards chaos and destruction whether you are muslim, christian or jew,
