Bucharest Conference in Advance of NATO Summit, April 1-3, 2008

The Bucharest Conference, held from April 1 to 3, before and during the Bucharest NATO Summit, will include keynote addresses by Romanian President Traian Băsescu and Romanian Prime Minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, as well as other panel discussions on pressing NATO issues such as enlargement, missile defense, and Russia. Afghan President Hamid Karzai and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will also discuss alliance operations in Afghanistan on an April 2 panel.

Featured speakers and panelists will include Ellen Tauscher, Chairwoman of the U.S. House Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, and Estonian President Toomas Ilves, among others. These figures and many more will address an audience of internationally recognized policymakers, officials, scholars, and business leaders.

The Bucharest Conference is organized by the German Marshall Fund of the United States in cooperation with the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chatham House. The event brings together leaders from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the most pressing challenges facing NATO and its member states.

This agenda shows public, on-the-record sessions that are open to media coverage and, for informational purposes, private, off-the-record sessions that are for participants only and that are not open to media coverage. The agenda is subject to change.

The German Marshall Fund and its partners invite the media to cover the public sessions in person using our press room in Bucharest or to cover us virtually via the Bucharest conference website, where audio and video of public sessions will be streamed live and where transcripts, audio, and video will be posted following each session as soon as they are available. The Bucharest Conference will also offer satellite video of highlights and some full sessions. Details on web streaming and satellite will be forthcoming in the next few weeks at www.bucharestconference.org.

The on-site Bucharest Conference press room features networked workspace, live video from the main plenary session, and a series of press availabilities. Space is limited. Media, including individual cameras, will get access into the plenary sessions on a rotating and space-available basis. Individual video and photo cameras are welcome at the Bucharest Conference for press conferences and interviews. Prior registration with The Bucharest Conference is required for access to The Bucharest Conference. Because of security restrictions, media must also be accredited to the NATO Summit. Live video from The Bucharest Conference is expected in the NATO Summit press center.
