Growth and Equity Programme Overseas Development Institute
The Growth and Equity Programme of the Poverty and Public Policy Group at the
Overseas Development Institute focuses on inclusive growth and poverty reduction. It undertakes research and advisory work which seeks to public policy and focuses on inclusive growth, risk and vulnerability, and exclusion. It aims to close the gap between two research themes - poverty and economic growth - that have followed separate paths for years.
The Growth and Equity Programme is seeking several interns to supports its work.
Internships
Making oil and gas work for inclusive development.
· Internships with this UNDP research project will involve providing support for the publication of the book ‘Making oil and gas work for development’. The internships will involve finding references and case studies for the book. The interns will mainly be responsible for identifying references relevant to the study, writing an annotated bibliography and working with the research team on the country case studies. Dimensions of oil and gas booms which are of particular relevance to the study are (i) legal and regulatory frameworks, (ii) institutions and enabling environment and (iii) environmental challenges.
Labour, employment and development policy.
· This internship will involve providing support for the scoping and development of a stream of work in ODI on labour, employment and development policy.
Aid for trade and trade-poverty linkages.
· This internship will involve providing support for a DFID/Sweden funded project ‘Aid for trade: Promoting inclusive growth and poverty reduction’. The project focuses specifically on the linkages between trade and poverty reduction.
Macro economy and poverty in Kenya.
· This internship will involve providing support for a Chronic Poverty Research Centre project on chronic poverty in Kenya.
Selection criteria
· Post-graduate qualification in economics or development studies (with economics undergraduate degree or economics subjects as part of development studies qualification). This includes students finishing their degree at the end of the 2008/09 academic year.
· Experience and/or interest in international development policy research.
· Ability to work independently.
· For the ‘Making oil and gas work for inclusive growth’ internships, good understanding of trade booms and resource curse would be preferable. Since some sections of the book relate to (i) the legal and regulatory environment, and (ii) environmental challenges, knowledge or experience in these two areas would be a plus.
· For the other internships, relevant experience and knowledge would be a plus.
Internship periods, work location and remuneration
· Making oil and gas work for inclusive growth internships
o Internship period: The internships will start as soon as possible, for a period of 3 months (ideally mid-June through to mid-September).
o Work location: No requirement to work in London.
o Remuneration: Each intern will be remuneration at a rate of between £300 and £400 for the 3 month period.
· Other internships:
o Internship period: July for up to 12 weeks (full time or part time).
o Work location: No requirement to work in London.
o Remuneration: These internships will be voluntary positions.
