Solutions for a complex world: Governance, Conflict and Crisis, and Aid Effectiveness
The European PhD Program in Social Protection Policy (ESPP) and the
Dual Career PhD Program in Governance and Policy Analysis (GPAC2) of the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance invite junior and senior researchers to participate in a research conference on “Governance, Aid Effectiveness, Conflict and Crisis” on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 November 2008 in Maastricht, The Netherlands.
The conference brings together senior and junior researchers with diverse academic background to share ideas on the relation between governance, aid
effectiveness and conflict and crisis studied from various angles. We invite experts in the abovementioned fields, as well as people working in one the following area’s to present their recent research:
1. Governance:
Over the past decade, there has been a fundamental shift in development policies: Sound governance is now considered to be at the core of a country’s economic and social development process. For this panel, we invite papers from all disciplines on “governance and development”, “the interaction between different aspects of governance”, “governance theories and concepts”, “governance case studies”, “measuring (good) governance” and the “impact of governance programs and reforms”. Both papers on developed and developing countries are welcome.
2. Aid Effectiveness:
Development aid flows have skyrocketed over the past decades. Official development aid flows alone were above 100 billion US dollars in 2006. Public and private donors are now omnipresent in developing countries For this panel we invite papers that investigate the “impact of aid on recipient countries”, the “pros and cons of different aid modalities”, the “measurement of aid effectiveness”, the “policies and strategies to improve aid effectiveness”, the “interaction between donors and recipients”, “aid effectiveness case studies”, the “domestic accountability effect of aid” or the “incentive effects of aid”.
3. Conflict and Crisis:
In the contemporary relations, conflict and crises continue to represent an undisputed reality in politics and society as a whole. This reality is intensified by a continuous redefinition of the globalization phenomenon which in turn creates pressure alongside identity politics, the development of the supranational entities such as the European Union, the mobilization of various ethnic groups, the dismantling of the traditional nation-state structures etc. This panel specifically considers how these interdependent conflicting factors shape the governance agenda on the national, regional, supranational or global multilevel structures.
We are interested in receiving papers fitting one of the above mentioned fields of study, both theoretical and applied, from a wide range of disciplines and countries, as the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance favours an international and interdisciplinary approach to social sciences.
Please complete the application form on the internet site, and send an extended abstract (400 words) before September 15, 2008. We will let you know before September 30, 2008, whether your paper has been selected for the conference.
The full paper has to be submitted by October 31, 2008.
The conference fee, including conference materials, coffee/tea, lunch
and conference diner is 100 euro. PhD students selected for presentation of a paper will receive a tuition waiver. Other participants presenting a paper can apply for a reduced fee. Travel and housing arrangements are not included in the conference fee. We do assist in making arrangements.
